Ranchi: From the son of a Kargil War hero to India’s newest Test star, Dhruv Jurel ’s rise has become one of Indian cricket’s most inspiring stories.
Born in Agra, Dhruv is the son of Havaldar Nem Singh Jurel, a proud veteran of the 1999 Kargil War. While his father once dreamt of seeing Dhruv follow in his footsteps and join the Indian Army, destiny had different plans — and Dhruv had a bat in his hand.
“My father always wanted me to wear the uniform,” Dhruv revealed after his standout Test performance in Ranchi. “But I chose cricket. That salute was for him.”
✨ The Salute That Went Viral

In his second Test against England in February 2024, Dhruv played a crucial 90-run knock under pressure, steering India out of trouble and into a match-winning position. But what grabbed national attention was not just his innings — it was his post-match celebration: a firm salute to the dressing room, paying homage to his soldier father.
That moment became symbolic — the bat replacing the gun, but the spirit of service intact.

Cricket wasn’t an easy dream. His first kit was bought with money borrowed and a gold chain pledged by his mother. “There were days we couldn’t afford even a good bat,” Dhruv said. But the Jurel family backed him all the way.
Starting his journey at a summer camp in Agra, Dhruv eventually trained in Noida under coach Phool Chand. His talent blossomed quickly, leading to selections in UP’s age-group teams and eventually the Indian U-19 squad, where he served as vice-captain during the 2020 World Cup.

Jurel made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2023 and soon impressed with his calm finishes. He carried that maturity into the longer format, making his Test debut in 2024 during the home series against England. Analysts have already dubbed him “MS Dhoni-like” for his composure and glove work under pressure.
