Tamil Nadu has once again aimed high in its pursuit of sporting excellence. The state government, led by Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development Udhayanidhi Stalin, has sanctioned ₹17.01 crore to build India’s first “green” international-standard six-trap and skeet shooting range at Keerapakkam, Vandalur Taluk in Chengalpet district.
The new facility will put Tamil Nadu firmly on the national and international shooting map — combining world-class standards with an eco-friendly design that sets a precedent for sports infrastructure across India.
🔫 Aiming for Global Standards
The shooting range will feature six advanced trap houses, skeet layouts, electronic target systems, administrative buildings, armoury zones, and spectator stands, all developed in line with International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) regulations.
What makes this project stand out is its green commitment — the range will use solar power, rainwater harvesting, and lead-free pellets to minimize environmental impact. Landscaping around the range will include noise-absorbing trees and waste-water recycling systems to achieve “green certification” status.
🎯 Empowering Tamil Nadu’s Shooting Talent
The announcement has created a wave of excitement among the state’s shooting community. Tamil Nadu has produced a steady line of talented marksmen and women, but most have had to travel to Delhi or Pune for elite-level training.
With the new Keerapakkam range, that barrier will be broken. The facility will serve as a permanent home ground for both grassroots and professional shooters, including those representing Tamil Nadu in national and international events.
🌱 Sustainable Vision Meets Sporting Ambition
Tamil Nadu’s investment reflects a broader mission — one that merges sustainability with sports excellence. The state has already pioneered the “One District, One Sport” initiative and developed multi-disciplinary sports complexes across cities like Madurai, Coimbatore, and Trichy.
This new shooting range is being seen as the flagship project of the next phase — targeting Olympic and precision-based disciplines. It is expected to create hundreds of local jobs, attract private sponsorship, and boost sports tourism in the Vandalur-Chengalpet corridor.
🏅 Towards India’s Olympic Dream
India’s shooters have been among the nation’s strongest medal prospects at the Olympics and Asian Games. However, limited world-class infrastructure in southern India has often restricted access for many promising talents.
The Keerapakkam range will help close that gap. It is being designed to host international events in the future.
🚧 The Road Ahead
Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with completion targeted for late 2027. Once operational, the range will serve as the launchpad for Tamil Nadu’s next generation of Olympic shooters — and a statement of the state’s growing influence on India’s sporting map.
With this project, Tamil Nadu isn’t just building a shooting range — it’s building a future where green innovation, sporting ambition, and youth empowerment converge at the trigger point of excellence.
