Formula E : Oliver Rowland Closes in on Formula E Title with Stunning Tokyo E-Prix Victory
Oliver Rowland has taken a major leap towards securing the 2025 Formula E World Championship title after a commanding victory in the second race of the Tokyo E-Prix double-header. Racing on home turf for Nissan, Rowland converted his pole position into a fifth win of the season, solidifying his championship lead.
Rowland was joined on the podium by Pascal Wehrlein and Dan Ticktum, the latter celebrating his first-ever Formula E podium in a standout performance for Cupra Kiro.
However, the race spelled disappointment for other title hopefuls, with both Taylor Barnard and Antonio Felix da Costa retiring — a huge blow to their championship aspirations.

How the Tokyo E-Prix Race 2 Unfolded
Rowland got off to a clean start from pole, maintaining his lead into the early laps. Dan Ticktum slotted in behind him, followed closely by Pascal Wehrlein, as the top three began to build a lead.
The grid was reduced to 21 starters, with Mitch Evans ruled out due to irreparable damage sustained in a qualifying crash at Turn 16. Just a few laps into the race, da Costa was also forced to retire.
As is typical in Formula E, Attack Mode strategy led to several position changes. By Lap 21, Rowland had slipped back to sixth, as he still had more Attack Mode time remaining compared to his rivals.
Once all the frontrunners had activated their first Attack Mode, Wehrlein emerged as the new leader, followed by Ticktum and Barnard. The pace was relentless, with the peloton racing at a higher speed than usual.
On Lap 23, the entire top 10 activated their second Attack Mode. This strategic window gave Rowland the opportunity to surge forward. With clinical precision, he reclaimed track position, eventually overtaking Wehrlein with a bold move into a tight gap.
From there, Rowland controlled the race in the closing laps — until late drama on Lap 29 changed everything.
Late Chaos and a One-Lap Sprint Finish
Edoardo Mortara collided with Taylor Barnard, sending the latter into the wall and forcing a safety car deployment. With time running out, the race resumed for a one-lap dash to the finish.
Thanks to sufficient energy reserves, the final lap was flat-out, with no need for additional energy saving. Despite the tension, the top three positions remained unchanged, crowning Rowland the victor in a race packed with strategy, aggression, and championship-defining moments.
