Indy 500 : Shwartzman Stuns IndyCar with Historic Pole at 2025 Indy 500

In a sensational turn of events at the 2024 Indy 500, rookie driver Robert Shwartzman and newcomer team Prema Racing delivered a performance for the ages, claiming pole position for the 109th running of the iconic event. Just days ago, the team sat at the bottom of the timesheets at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Now, they’ve made history, overcoming odds to secure the top spot on the grid for their first-ever IndyCar oval race.
Shwartzman, a 25-year-old from Israel, became the first rookie to claim pole at the Indy 500 in 42 years, making his debut on the oval one to remember. Sharing the front row will be two-time Indy 500 champion Takuma Sato and rising Arrow McLaren star Pato O’Ward.
“No, honestly I can’t believe it,” Shwartzman told IndyCar on FOX after his stunning run. “The car felt amazing. I can’t thank Prema and Chevy enough. This is a dream. My first oval race, and I’m on pole. It’s unbelievable.”
The fairy tale moment for Shwartzman and Prema came after a rollercoaster build-up to qualifying. Earlier in the week, Prema struggled to get their setup dialed in, languishing at the bottom of the speed charts. But on the day that mattered most, they delivered a flawless run to seize the spotlight from some of IndyCar’s biggest names.
The Fast 6 Drama

The Fast 6 shootout was fierce. Sato appeared set to take his first career pole at the Indy 500 with an early run clocking in at 232.478 mph. He managed to stay ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s veterans Scott Dixon and Alex Palou, both considered strong contenders. But Shwartzman’s blistering late run denied Sato the top spot and shocked the paddock.
Felix Rosenqvist and Pato O’Ward also posted competitive times, but it wasn’t enough to dethrone the Prema rookie, who muscled his way into the history books.
Penske Plagued by Controversy
The qualifying drama didn’t end on track. Team Penske, one of the most dominant names in IndyCar history, faced major setbacks. Scott McLaughlin, a key Penske driver, was ruled out of qualifying after a heavy crash in morning practice destroyed his No. 3 Chevrolet.
Even worse, teammates Josef Newgarden and Will Power were barred from the Fast 12 after a technical infraction during pre-qualifying inspection. Officials discovered modifications made to the rear attenuator of Newgarden’s car, with similar changes on Power’s machine. Penske attempted to correct the issue in the pit lane, but the fixes were deemed illegal.
As a result, the trio of Penske drivers will start from Row 4, with McLaughlin in 10th, Power in 11th, and Newgarden in 12th—far from their usual stronghold at the front of the grid.
The Full Fast 12 Recap
David Malukas narrowly missed out on a Fast 6 spot after a late charge from Alex Palou edged him out. Malukas will start seventh, followed by Christian Lundgaard in eighth and 2022 Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson in ninth. Despite setbacks, all three are still well-positioned to mount a challenge in the race.
With the grid set, the stage is primed for an electrifying Indy 500 on Memorial Day weekend. Shwartzman’s pole position not only adds a fresh storyline to this year’s race but also signals the arrival of a new force in IndyCar—Prema Racing.
