CSK vs MI is by far the most anticipated game of every year’s IPL. And this year it came very early. CSK won the game convincingly on paper. So let’s dive into the game and read between the lines.
Chennai Super Kings started the game really well with back to back wickets. MI’s opening pair Rohit and Rickelton both fell to Khaleel’s bowling. And then came Will Jack who couldn’t stay on the pitch for long. And within a blink of an eye MI’s top order succumbed in Powerplay. Though the partnership of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma was hard to break for the CSK’s bowling lineup, it did not do much damage. While MI was suffering at 96-6 with every batter going out to the pavilion, All rounders and bowlers stepped up and helped the team to reach a respectable score of 155.
Now let us read between the lines. Though Khaleel Ahmed’s opening spell had 2 brilliant wickets, some of his deliveries were questionable and they might not always yield the same result. Suryakumar’s lack of venom is extremely worrying for MI. CSK’s pace attack must step up, if not they will struggle to get points off teams that enjoy playing spin such as SRH. Seeing CSK struggle to get wickets towards the end of the innings is a huge concern going forward.
Coming to the 2nd innings, CSK’s decision to start Rahul Tripathi did not go according to the plan. But Rachin and Ruturaj made a match winning partnership for the 2nd wicket. And then we had to watch the entire middle order of CSK fall to MI’s spin attack. Then came Jadeja to bring a bit of stability which allowed CSK to settle down and go big in the final 2 overs, which was perfectly done by Rachin.
And here the problem is the Middle order that struggled to even stand up. Dube who was reliable throughout the 2024 season fell to Vignesh Puthur’s magic. And then came two unreliable players in Deepak Hooda and Sam Curran. Two ‘hit or miss’ players in a position where your team needs you to stay and bring in some stability?? Doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. Mumbai missed both Bumrah and Hardik for sure. Without Bumrah and Hardik MI’ bowling lineup looks mid to me.
