Beyond the cultural celebration, dragon boat racing is growing as an international sport. Several teams competing in China this month also participated in the 2024 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships, which served as a qualifying event for the 2025 World Games in Chengdu.

Among the big headlines, the Philippines secured qualification in the mixed 10-seater category, underlining Southeast Asia’s growing strength in the sport. China, unsurprisingly, remains the dominant force, but the competition is getting tighter every year.

A Festival for the Senses

Aside from the races, the Dragon Boat Festival is a feast for the senses. Street markets are bustling with vendors selling zongzi, flavored with anything from red bean to spicy pork belly. People also hang mugwort and calamus over their doors, wear fragrant sachets, and drink realgar wine, believed to fend off evil spirits and disease.
